The regions of Brazil are a href="https://en.abc-distancias.com/carto/76854432.php" title="map of Brazil">official territorial division of Brazil, proposed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 1969.

It is the largest (in extent) territorial division in the country. Its usefulness is only statistical and has no administrative reality.

IBGE created this division based on geographical criteria such as climate, relief, vegetation and hydrography. These regions are also known as "natural regions of Brazil". The only exception is the Southeast region, for which the main criterion was the human criterion of industrial and urban development.

The five regions of Brazil

  • central-west region, which includes the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, besides the Federal District. It has about 12 million inhabitants in 1.60 million km² (19% of the national territory). The region is composed mainly of high plateaus, covered by cerrado vegetation. It also includes the Pantanal depression.
  • Northeast region, which includes the states of Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe and Bahia. It has about 50 million inhabitants (the Nordestins) above 1.56 million km² (18% of the national territory). It has a coastal strip overlooking a large semi-arid central plateau, the sertão.
  • northern region, which includes the states of Acre, Amazonas, Roraima, Rondônia, Pará, Amapá and Tocantins. It has approximately 14 million inhabitants over 3.85 million km² (45% of the national territory). The region covers the Brazilian part of the Amazon basin and is mainly covered by tropical forest.
  • southeast region, which includes the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. It has approximately 77 million inhabitants over 0.93 million km² (11% of the national territory). It is the mos
